Golden Milk

Let’s talk about inflammation for a minute. We all get it from time to time, usually in the form of a muscle strain, a sprain, or even arthritis. I’m currently dealing with a doozy of a neck strain. I wish I had an awesome story to go along with it, like how it all began at a Canada Day gathering where I was doing an impressive party trick with my giraffe-like neck, when all of a sudden… nope, that didn’t happen. I did attend a party, it was tame, there were no tricks, I just went to bed and woke up the next morning in pain. Apparently I slept in a position that severely strained my neck, which causes immense pain and near immobility. This all probably could have been avoided; I’ve been slacking on diet, fitness, yoga/meditation, poor sitting posture, and generally letting stress get the better of me. It’s amazing what stress can do to the body, how it can shut you right down.

I know that the last recipe you’d like to see on this site right now is one for a warm drink, but hear me out! I enjoyed this beverage on a 30 degree afternoon, granted I was inside, in the shade, taking it VERY easy, but still.

Have you ever had turmeric? It’s not the most delicious spice. So, if you’re a little concerned about this recipe, I hear you, I was pretty skeptical at first also. Forget you’ve ever tasted it . This. Recipe. Is. Delicious. Give it a try!

Turmeric has many medicinal properties, did you know it’s the most studied herb in the whole wide world? One of the main benefits you can get from ingesting turmeric is that it’s an inti-inflammatory, whoa! Take that, neck strain. Unfortunately herbal medicine doesn’t really work that way, you can’t take it like an advil and feel positive results 20 minutes later, but it’s nice to know that I can get more turmeric into my diet on a regular basis in a delicious way now that I know this recipe.

If you're dairy-free replace the milk with almond, soy or rice milk. If you don't have coconut oil, try almond oil. I highly recommend you use honey, but I suppose a tsp of sugar would work too.

Golden Milk

1 cup milk

2 tsp coconut oil

1/2 cup water

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

honey to taste (1 tbsp?)

In a small pot heat the milk and coconut oil over medium heat. At the same time in another small pot or pan heat the water and turmeric powder, also over medium heat. When the water and turmeric come up to a a simmer, let it cook for 30 seconds or so and then add to the milk mixture. Swirl it all around until combined, then stir in the honey. Pour into your favourite mug and ENJOY!
