This recipe has been part of my family's Christmas routine since way before my time. My Nana used to make them every Christmas, then my mom took over, and now I also enjoy making a batch during the holidays to have around for snacking and gift giving.
I have such fond memories of going to my grandparents house at Christmas, smuggling a whole mason jar full of Nuts & Bolts from their pantry, and hunkering down in a corner until the jar was empty – save for the handful of peanuts which I found unpalatable.
Nuts & Bolts
Heat oven to 200F
1 lb butter
1 Tbsp garlic salt
1 Tbsp onion salt
1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
750g box cheerios 500g box shreddies 1 medium size bag peanuts (450-600g) 1 medium size bag short pretzel sticks (250-300g) 1 box cheese sticks (Christie’s)
Melt the butter (yes the whole pound) and add the worcestershire sauce.
In a seperate bowl mix the garlic and onion salt, set aside.
In a very large roasting pan mix the cheerios, shreddies, peanuts, pretzels, and cheese sticks. Stir the butter mixuture and slowly drizzle some over the cereal mix, then sprinkle with the salt mixture and give a good stir. Repeat this process until everything is gone, this may take 10 or more rounds.
Put in oven, uncovered, for 2 hours. Stir every 15 minutes.
Do not cover while cooking!!
