Bourbon. Just say it out loud, let it pass over your lips and roll off the tongue. I’ve been actively participating in a love affair with bourbon for quite some time now. Though I’ve had my doubts about whiskey, I’ve never questioned bourbon. On a warm summer night, there isn’t anything quite like an adirondack chair, a bourbon-based libation, and some good company.

Kentucky Summer

1½ oz of bourbon

¾ oz of maraschino cherry liqueur (eg Luxardo)

1 oz of freshly squeezed lemon juice

¼ oz of simple syrup

dash Angostura bitters

Basil leaves

In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine the bourbon, Maraschino, lemon juice, simple syrup, bitters, and five whole basil leaves. Shake all that up good and hard - about 30 seconds.

Double strain (though a fine mesh strainer) into a chilled glass with fresh ice. Add a splash of soda and garnish with basil.
